DropBin
Jul 15, 2025
The City of Millbrae was the first to pilot Innovabin’s Drop Bin—a revolutionary CRV bag drop unit tailored for public, transit-accessible spaces. Placed strategically at a high traffic area, the Drop Bin served both local residents and daily commuters with a secure, easy-to-use drop-off point.
The pilot demonstrated the unit’s effectiveness across multiple dimensions: adoption by users, system durability, and full integration with the BOTTLEBANK digital platform. The Drop Bin features a multilingual LED screen for community education, a tamper-proof locking mechanism, and full digital traceability from drop-off to refund. The pilot confirmed the unit’s ease of use, durability, and public appeal—while providing live CRV data and processing digital refunds in real time.

For Municipalities & Transit Agencies
Space-Efficient
The Drop Bin is a plug-and-play solution that requires no trenching, water access, or heavy permitting (depending on the local municipality). It fits in a standard parking space or sidewalk edge and can be moved as needed.
Brings Recycling Access to Transit Nodes
Installed at strategic locations, the unit can make CRV redemption available to thousands of commuters without requiring them to detour to a buyback center.
Reduces Informal Collection and Litter
With secure, structured access to redemption, the system discourages bottle hoarding and street-level scavenging. Public areas stay cleaner and safer.
Supports Community Education & Outreach
The large, solar-powered LED screen can play multilingual messages about CRV rules, sustainability, and upcoming local events—serving as a valuable communication platform.
For Retailers
Off-Site CRV Compliance Tool
For retailers in CRV convenience zones, co-locating a BOTTLEBANK Drop Bin nearby fulfills redemption obligations without disrupting store operations or aesthetics.
No Staff Time or In-Store Risks
The bin is fully self-service and digitally monitored—eliminating the need for store associates to manage container returns, payouts, or potential customer disputes.
Sustainability Messaging Opportunity
The LED screen can be used to display the retailer’s green initiatives, public commitments, or seasonal campaigns, enhancing local brand reputation.
Shared Cost, Shared Benefit
In collaborative deployments, BOTTLEBANK Drop Bins can be co-branded and partially funded by retail partners, giving them shared ownership and visibility without operational responsibility.
For the Public
Quick, Contact-Free Drop-Off
Users simply scan the bag's code, insert it into the secured chute, and receive a refund later via app. The process takes less than 30 seconds.
Accessible, Day and Night
With optional solar power and battery backup, the bin can function even in low-light conditions, making CRV drop-offs possible beyond business hours.
Multilingual & Educational
On-screen instructions and recycling tips can be available in multiple languages, helping ensure that all users—regardless of age or language proficiency—can participate confidently.
Clean, Safe, and Trusted
The sealed design prevents tampering, odor, and contamination. Public feedback during the pilot confirmed a strong sense of safety and satisfaction.
For Operators
Self-Filling, Low-Maintenance Design
The bin accommodates over 250 bags with an internal gravity-fed liner, reducing pickup frequency and associated costs.
Real-Time Monitoring & Alerts
Fill levels, lock status, and service needs are tracked digitally, giving operators the ability to manage the system remotely and respond before issues arise.
Data-Ready for CRV Reporting
Every bag is logged in the backend system, complete with location, timestamp, weight, and refund history—streamlining reconciliation with processors and regulators.
Proven Pilot Results
The Millbrae test confirmed 98% uptime, zero incidents, and strong user satisfaction—validating the BOTTLEBANK Drop Bin as a scalable component of California’s evolving CRV infrastructure.
